Lanzarote Weather & Climate
Lanzarote holidays enjoy a mild, dry climate that remains fairly constant throughout the year, with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21° Celsius in January to 29° Celsius in August. Plenty of sun and round-the-year warmth make conditions perfect for cheap Lanzarote holiday with family or friends at any time!
Lanzarote lies within a zone of hot and dry climate, where rain is very rare, resulting in a semi-desert climate. Unlike most of the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote features no high mountains (the highest being around 670 metres - 2,198 ft), which means that it is lacking the natural barrier, the so-called 'sea of clouds', normally responsible for creating rain conditions, lower evaporation and a reasonable humidity level.
On an average there are no more than 16 days of rainfall annually - and these can usually be experienced during the months December to February!
Lanzarote's climate can vary depending on where you are - even so it has the most consistent climate of all the islands of the archipelago, which makes it a favourite winter holiday destination for northern Europeans.
The north of the island is usually windier and cloudier and has a little more rain due to the moist trade winds blowing generally from the north. The southern part is drier and hotter and enjoys as much as 2500 sunshine hours annually.
Central Lanzarote, located between the windier north and the sunnier south, can be said to have the most moderate climate on the island.Lanzarote suffers the warmest days of the year in summer when the hot sirocco wind - a phenomenon referred to by the locals as kalima or Tiempo Africano (African weather) - is prevailing.
This hot, dry air from the Sahara desert, laden with fine dust, makes everybody feel very uncomfortable.

There is much to tempt you on a cheap holiday in Lanzarote with many of the attractions based around the island's unique volcanic scenery. In the north is the Atlantida cave system that includes the Cueva de los Verdes, the Green Caves, the longest volcanic tunnel in the world.
Elsewhere in the same cave system is Jameos del Agua, a natural concert hall famed for its amazing acoustics, a subterranean lagoon, a restaurant and a museum.
The artist Cesar Manrique helped to create this beautiful spectacle, which hosts regular music events. Manrique was instrumental in shaping many of the island's best attractions, including the fascinating Cactus Garden on the road between Guatiza and Mala.
The old fort of Castillo de San Jose, in Arrecife, has been converted into the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo which houses the most important collection of modern art in the Canaries.
There is also a nice restaurant within the old castle. The town's other fort, the Castillo de San Gabriel, is home to an archaeological museum.
The Timananfaya National Park covers about a quarter of Lanzarote and encompasses the most breathtaking of this volcanic landscape including the Montanas del Fuego, the Mountains of Fire.
On the northernmost tip of the island is the Mirador del Rio, a lookout point that offers panoramic views of the small islands to the north of Lanzarote. Apart from the drama of Lanzarote's volcanic landscape the island is famed for its beautiful beaches that come in a surprising variety of colours from bright white to golden yellow and black sands.
In the south, from Arrecife to Puerto del Carmen, a string of fantastic beaches line the coast including Playa Grande and Playa Chica where you can indulge in a few watersports or relax in the sun.

Papagayo, in the south near the resort of is considered by many to be the finest beach in Lanzarote, with its stunning white sands meeting deep-blue Atlantic waters. Little wonder that it is extremely popular with people on holiday in Lanzarote!

Arrecife: The Capital of Lanzarote
Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and, with a population of 40,000, the biggest town on the island. Near enough half the population of the island lives here.
The name Arrecife means reef and refers to the coral reef which lies quite near to the coast at this point. At the time when deep sea fishing was still an important industry, the harbour at Arrecife was the home of the Canary Islands fishing fleet.
A lot is being done at this moment to improve the town and make pedestrian precincts, and above all to renovate the promenade and extend it.
The promenade has already been improved, flowering trees have been planted, and the centre of the town is acquiring a face-lift and general clean-up. Slowly more and more, what was just a jumble of odd buildings, is developing into a town with pleasant streets and squares, shops or lovely cafés, restaurants and tapas bars - where you can find all the busy people of a city.
On the outskirts of Arrecife, especially on the northern side of the town, there are industrial complexes with furniture stores, cash-and-carry supermarkets, building firms, carpentry workshops and other industries.
Not far from Arrecife is the airport, which has been completely rebuilt and which was opened at the end of 1999. lt is a modem, international airport, with planes leaving and arriving daily, going to and from the other Canary Islands, the Spanish mainland, as well as the main cities of Europe. All the well-known charter and schedule flight companies are represented.

Medical Care in Lanzarote
High quality medical care, both private and national, is offered by a wide selection of clinics, medical centres and hospitals. The main hospital in Lanzarote is the Hospital General de Lanzarote, located in Arrecife the main city in Lanzarote.
There is also a private hospital in Lanzarote’s main resort of Puerto del Carmen. All of Lanzarote’s major holiday resorts are well equipped with governmental or privately run medical centres.
Remember the governmental ones are called ‘Centro de Salud’.
Medical insurance is strongly advised, even though EU citizens can obtain a refund of most medical costs by using form E111 (available from health offices in your country). Make sure you get this form before you leave your home country.
There are many English-speaking doctors and dentists. Your hotel will always be able to recommend one. The local chemists (Farmacia), recognisable by a green cross sign, will have the most well-known proprietary brands of analgesics and popular remedies, but should you need to take any special medication, then bring it with you a sufficient supply.
Minor medical problems can often be solved at the chemist and there is always one open after hours in each area. The location of the duty chemist is indicated on every chemist’s door.
Those who need dialyses can find a centre in Puerto del Carmen that provides all the necessary treatment and also offers high quality accommodation. However, you must make advance arrangements before leaving home.
If you are taking small children with you please take a small medical travel kit which can be handy when the kids injure them selves.
Remember plan your holiday to enjoy your holiday!
